BOOK OF THE WEEK: NICO-SONGS THEY NEVER PLAY ON THE RADIO by James Young

I once knew this junkie chick who was a dominatrix. At first, hanging out with her was exotic and interesting. She'd tell stories about nailing  a dudes dick to a couch or making a guy shove a coffee pot up his ass and she'd be charming and lovely. Her siamese cat was named Bran Muffin, it only ate sardines. I thought I was cool when I hung around her....like she was some kinda supermodel.
Pretty quickly our relationship wasn't so glamorous. I would have to give her rides to dealers houses, lend her cash  and eventually ended up looking after her ancient and horrible cat (and footing the bills) while it shit and pissed all over everything. I think that's what knowing Nico must have been like.
This book is hilarious. I normally hate biographies but this is a worthy read. It traces the attempted comeback of Nico in the 80's. It was Written by the guy who was hired to play keyboard for the world tour. Great characters, perfect descriptions of life in the 80's and the inside stories of some of those shitty songs with Nico's harmonium....I can't believe I have all that shit on vinyl......

INSANE IN THE MEMBRAIN(Ariel Perazolli Lobotomy Remix): CYPRESS HILLS OF NY

This was a white label. I have no idea who Ariel Perrazzoli is, but i sure got a lot of mileage from this. Before I discovered B'more, I wanted to play rave music that wasn't so gay sounding, this kinda seemed like the thing. Techno with rap samples. The b-side of this had ACDC:Jailbreak remixed. If you're nice, I may share.

SHAKE OFF: ROD LEE

Rod Lee is the best. He could make me believe anything. I bet you could play that song 'Let's Het High' to a nun and she'd start smokin that very day. He owns CLUB KINGZ records and a legendary record store in Baltimore. We should all go there and buy stuff. I don't do twatter but he does if you follow that shit. www.twitter.com/djrodlee

PULL OVER: LEVERT

The best thing about doing this blog is learning shit. At first I am uploading some old stupid record from my collection and then through trying to find an image some background info I discover all kinds of interesting tidbits.
I thought that this was just some obscure one off by some random electro-r&b dudes. Then I find out Gerald Levert and his brother were the sons of one of the O'Jays and that Gerald went to be in LSG, an R&B group featuring Keith Sweat and Jonny Gill! My god, can you imagine the steamy panties those dudes must have caused at each and every show? Shit, I think I'm gettin a lil wet just thinkin bout it. Anyway check out how innovative this track is.

PUT IT UP IN THE AIR: DJ FINESSE

Another great party banger, CROOKLYN CLAN or CLUBANGAZ style. I got a bunch of these DJ FINESSE URBAN HITS Complations that feature some good mash-ups, blends and party tracks.

FEEL IT: THE AFRO's

This is a great track from 1990. The video is worth checking out. Some of the worst lyrics ever. They don't really even make sense. If you can find the vinyl then you get all kinds of bonus  beats and even an instruAFROmental. Apparently DJ Hurricane had something to do with these group.

SCORPIO: DENNIS COFFEY and the DETROIT GUITAR BAND

There is one of the all time classic breakbeats in the middle of this but it's also a great song. My heart is still in Detroit I guess. The rest of the album is pretty mediocre but worth a listen. Check out this french weirdos blog if you want the RAR file. http://funkytownsoul.blogspot.com/2011/03/dennis-coffey-and-detroit-guitar-band.html

BOOK OF THE WEEK:TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT by Graham Greene

I haven't done any book suggestions for a bit cuz I've been geeking out on lord Of The Rings (for about the millionth time) and it's going a little slow. I don't need to tell anybody how great a book that is. I used to read it every year but I haven't done it since the movies came out.
In any case, I guess I'll mention a book I read a while ago. 'Travels with my Aunt' is a great read. It has everything you want from a good Graham Greene novel. The protaganist is this lame old banker who is retiring when he meets his old Aunt for the first time in 50 years. He takes a trip with her to Brighton and finds that she smuggles dope, sleeps with young black men and has way more fun than he does. Of course he's appalled at first but learns to crave the excitement she provides. it's pretty fucking hilarious and might even make you cry.
Also check out The Comedians,  The Power and the Glory and Our Man in Havana. Although all his stuff is pretty good.
