FORGET THE DEAD ONES, HERE ARE SOME PEOPLE THAT WERE SPARED BY 2016.

I heard a lot of belly aching around new years about all of the amazing humans who's lives were cut down by 2016. What a shock. People die. Thats what they do. The price of life is death, just be thankful it wasn't you. Also be thankful and pleasantly surprised a lot more people didn't die. Think about it: there are still 2 Beatles left, Bill Cosby, Robert Mugabe, David Suzuki, Keith Richards, both brothers from Oasis, and all kinds of old crusties still kicking.
Here at Degenerate Planet we thought we'd give thanks to 2016 for sparing some of our faves....

OZZY
Its a bonified miracle that this motherfucker is still alive and KILLING IT. I saw the epic Sabbath show in Vancouver this year and not only could he sing he could actually SPEAK LEGIBLY between songs. I don't need to list the mans credentials here....he's a living legend. Ranked #56 on the celebrity death pool.

TED DANSON
Why be thankful Sam from Cheers is still alive? I have no idea. I just like him. Don't forget he also played Gulliver and was on that HBO show. Also he went in black face to some academy thing with Woopie Goldberg. (Who is also still alive, dammit.)

SHANE MCGOWAN
How the hell is this motherfucker still breathing? According to him cognac is deadly, NOT heroin. Also if you eat a raw onion every day and drink Guiness you will live indefinitely.

FLAVA FLAV (AND CHUCK D.)
Praise the Lord. God is good.

 WERNER HERZOG
“Look into the eyes of a chicken and you will see real stupidity. It is a kind of bottomless stupidity, a fiendish stupidity. They are the most horrifying, cannibalistic and nightmarish creatures in the world.”― Werner Herzog

GLORIA STEINEM
In a world that has recinded civil rights and feminism Gloria keeps on keeping on. I would have never payed much attention except that I saw her on Larry Sanders and became a fan. Recently heard a conversation between her and Elen Burnstyn that made me cry.

 DON RICKLES
Nothing could kill the toughest man on earth. Even being beaten with a rotary phone by Joe Pesci.

LARRY DAVID
Another season of Larry David before the Grim Reaper comes. Everyone pray with me now.

ENNIO MORICONE
I would mention Clint but he is such a cunt. I hope they get some pictures of him blowing a horse or Trump or something. Anyway, Ennio is a machine. Still churning out classics. And he invented my favourite genre of music.

DELTA BURKE
I wish I could put a Golden Girl on this list but I can't so I put a Designing Woman on instead. She's not even my favourite but its no surprise that Annie Potts is still walking this planet. A plumper like Delta not dead from Dorito's and Oxycontin is more newsworthy....

Feel free to throw some honourable mentions in the comments....

CHRISTMAS ALBUMS THAT ARE TOLERABLE

Seems like everyone does one of these. Fuck it, I will too....
Obviously, Vince Guaraldi and Boney M and Run DMC are listenable but these are a little more obscure. Im not saying its all great but at least its off the beaten path.

 ROTARY CONNECTION: PEACE
This is a weird 60s band that I was turned on to cuz of my love of the 5th Dimension. Frankly, Connection doesn't hold a torch but their Xmas album is pretty stellar. Lots of originals, the right amount of sleigh bells. Great cover.

A YELLOW CHRISTMAS
This album is awful but worth an annual listen. Its just fun to hear Yellowman replace his name for Santa and Jamaica for Christmas for 10 agonizingly long Xmas standards.

LOW: CHRISTMAS
Great pop album with a somber version of little drummer boy. I heard 'Just Like Christmas' in Superstore the other day.

A JOHN WATERS CHRISTMAS
'Here Comes Fatty With His Bag Of Shit.' What more do you want. A well curated, deep Xmas comp. Tiny Tim makes an appearance amongst some kitsch and soul.

CHRISTMAS EVE WITH BURL IVES
Ok. This is terrible but I love Burl.

BADD SANTA: A STONES THROW XMAS
When I first heard this I thought I had an annual Xmas soundtrack but it wears thin. The Xmas cover of "Rock The Bells" is worth it though....

Anyway. I hope this helped you annoy someone you love or at least gave you a break from the Amy Grant Christmas album or whatever....

BEST OF 2014

As per usual, this list has nothing to do with 2014 except that maybe I enjoyed it, or discovered it this last year. In no particular order. Also, I have done more brain damage this year, so I don't remember much.

CHILDISH GAMBINO-CUZ THE INTERNET
Who would have thought that the nerdy kid from Community would actually be funny and musically talented? This album definitely takes a lot from other artists but blends it all beautifully. Stevie Wonder, Drake, Kanye, some trap, some soul, clever lyrical content....and it doesn't wear out after a few listens. Look forward to more. His movie Mystery Squad is also really good.

MIKE TYSON MYSTERIES
This is amazing, totally in  the mystery solving style of the late 60s Hanna Barbera cartoons, with guests like Cormac McCarthy and Buzz Aldrin. Voiced by Mike himself with Norm McDonald as the pigeon.

NICHOLS
A James Garner show no one ever heard of from before Rockford Files? A western in the style of Rockford with a lot of the same actors including the guy that played Angel? Yes, it's true. It saved my life. And the whole series is on Youtube.

EL MICHELS AFFAIR-ENTER THE 37th CHAMBER
Wu-Tang instrumentals by a classy soul band? Someones getting laid somewhere.

PERVERTS GUIDE TO IDEOLOGY
This is the weirdest documentary ever. I've seen it a few times and I'm still not sure what it is but the host is mesmerizing. And the style of cutting from classic films to the narrator actually sitting in the sets is mind blowing. Somehow he ties together John Wayne, Coca Cola, Beethovens 9th and 'They Live' to show us how we are living under the Jackboot of "Democracy".

LEE FIELDS & THE EXPRESSIONS
Yeah, I know. I slept on this. But all this Dap shit is soooooooo good. It's like time travel. Charles Bradley is almost as great. Lee just has a bit of an edge.

BILL COSBY
Fuck I hate old Bill Cosby. He's so cranky and righteous and right wing and unfunny. So I was so happy to find out he's been drugging and raping women for years. He turns them to Jello and stick them with his puddin pop while they're unconscious! Brilliant! Evil! Now I can hate him for a good reason. What's weird is that I,Spy has become one of my favourite TV shows. It's really good.

PHILIP K. DICK
I had read Scanner Darkly quite a few times and it was in my top 10 novels for sure but for some reason never tried any others. Last year I dabbled in sci-fi, but this year I was crazy for Dick. The Valis Trilogy, Time Out of Joint, Game Players Of Titan, Ubik, and I've got so many more to go. Mind blowing, heart wrenching, funny and readable. Thank you Jesse for introducing me to PKD.

ANGEL OLSON
I listened to a lot of sad girl music this year. I'm a sad girl on the inside I guess. This is the Kit, Regina Spektor and Angel Olson. She's something special. Mad regrets I didn't get to see her show in Victoria. Sometimes my sad girl life gets in the way. The new album 'Burn Your Fire For No Witness'
is definitely worth getting. Punk, Country, Folk, and she's beautiful.

ROOM 237
This was the year of Kubrick for me. Yeah, I might have seen this in 2013 but I watched it so many times this year as well as a few Kubrick docs and all his films again at least once. (except Eyes Wide Shut, I don't wanna see Nicole Kidman fucking anyone else but me). At first you're laughing at these conspiracy morons and then they overlay The Shining backwards and forwards at the same time and your mind just explodes. FUCKING GENIUS. The moon landing was fake after all.....now what are the hidden meanings in Barry Lyndon?

DJPLAN : BUTTER SOFT BALLER MIXTAPE

A healthy but mellow mix of sometimes happy, sometimes sad tracks ranging from moombahton and moombahsoul to house and a hard ass climax. Enjoy.
