TOP 10 of 2012

1. DEREK ALLAN

Derek Allan or DJA was one of the few musical things that sticks out for me in 2012. He did a great E.P. of covers including Tina Turner and Genesis as well as some dope originals and remixes. He is also one half of BLOOD BROTHERS with Dirty South Joe. They do action soundtrack mixtapes. If you want to smile and say "sheeeeee-it" like that guy from The Wire then check this out. It makes me embarrassed to be Canadian.

2.ADVENTURE TIME WITH FINN AND JAKE

I guess this cartoon has been out for a while but I wasn't aware until seeing a marathon of it while in Detroit this year. Even if the plots and characters weren't good the art is so beautiful it would still be worth watching. Thankfully the stories are well thought out and funny and the characters are sophisticated and multi-dimensional. The voice of the Jake the Dog is by Bender from Futurama and the ice King is Spongebob. Guest voices have included Biz Markie, Marc Maron and Andy Milonakis. It makes me happy every time it's on.

3.VASS

Trap seems to have taken over from Dubstep as the most pervasive and annoying genre but I still enjoy a track or two from time to time. Whoever Vass is, they do trap well. I overplayed the shit out of "BIG BLACK N****A" this summer.

4.LOUIE

It's the best when it's not even funny.

5.GHOAST

Apparently Cave Rave is a genre now. I'm not sure how it's defined but Ghoast does some hot remixes and their mixtape "THAT'S SO RAVIN" will make you feel like a 14 year old japanese girl.

6.TEEN WITCH

More Cave Rave From Chicago. Tasteful. Fresh. Interesting marketing ideas. Check it out.

7.COUSIN COLE AND PHI UNIT: SO EMOTIONAL

I was so bored by music this year. One of things I turned to was Cousin Cole and Pocketknifes classic"Tambourine Dream". Luckily, Cole has teamed up with Phi Unit to release a couple of volumes of silky smooth, super catchy moombahsoul remixes....

8. LIVE FROM LAUGH FACTORY WITH DOM IRERRA

I spend more time listening to WTF than music these days. I actually ran out of episodes at one point and was jonesing so bad that I started looking for other comedians podcasts. Luckily I found this. Dom Irerra is hilarious, I've been a fan ever since his appearances on DR. KATZ.

This podcast is actually terrible. Bad jokes, dead air, technical difficulties while Dom sings and bad mouths other comedians and chicks he used to date . His sidekick is this annoying Iranian that constantly interrupts everyone...it's so real.

9. MOONRISE KINGDOM

I love going to movies by myself. I cried during Sherlock Holmes and Kung Fu Panda 2. I mostly smiled during Moonrise Kingdom. Wes Anderson is great.

10. MODERN SEINFELD

Yes, one of the best things about this year was a twitter account. If you love Seinfeld, this is as good as new episodes.

Remember DJ Battles? I was in one once and the guy after me stole the last record I played. What a dink. Then he won. Anyway, I'm pretty sure it was Johnny Blaze and it had this song on it. Although Johnny Blaze isn't much for curse words since he has his own church. Maybe it weren't him. I don't know, someone stole the record.

FUCK YOU PAY ME: DJPLAN

I haven't done a mixtape in 6 months so I forced one out. I did it in one take, selected some songs I've been overplaying, some since summer. It's definitely a reflection of the kind of gigs I've been playing....weddings, teen video dances, strip clubs. Britney, Janet Jackson, Gotye, Rick Ross, etc.Yup. Download for free at :

I LOVE HYPNOTiZE : BIGGIE VS JOAN JETT

Whatever happened to these mash up gods? The Inhumanz and their Satanic Mashup series were the muthafuckin' shit way back in '07. Anyway, I'm gonna share a couple of their best ones.....I think I'm due for some new needles and a new serato box cuz everything sounds like shit to me these days. Maybe its cuz I quit drinking or I need to clean my ears..,....

KALIJAH by HUMP.

I recently unearthed some cassettes by legendary lo-fi shock rock duo HUMP. The first track I'd like to share is a cover version of KAWLIGA by Hank Williams from the cassette PHUCKIN PHUCK. I will eventually be sharing a ZIP file of the whole album.
Where are they now? Rumour has it that singer and bass player Velvet Cash is a moonshiner or meth cook living in the backwoods of Vancouver Island while guitarist and keyboard player Leatherwolf has accepted Jesus as his personal lord and saviour and resides somewhere in the Virgin Islands snorting copious amounts of Oxycodone.
